Summer Term School Concert

The Summer Term School Concert provided the audience with an entertaining evening of musical entertainment from many of our school ensembles.

The school concert began with the King’s Swingers with a lively set of pieces including James Brown’s I got you and concluded with guest vocalist Amelia D (U6) joining the band to sing A Natural Woman. The Lower Years Chamber Choir songs included a light-hearted piece about Mozart called A la cart and the Lower Years Orchestra performed two well-known pieces from the orchestral repertoire; Grieg’s In the hall of the mountain King and one of Brahms’ Hungarian Dances. The School Choir sang three contrasting pieces including an American sacred song, a little bit of musical theatre and one of Verdi’s popular opera choruses from Nabucco. The Wind Band performed Lord of the dance at the start of term service in the Cathedral and gave a second rendition in the concert. The opening solo was performed by flautist Felicity Q (U6).  Oliver A (U6) featured as the soloist in a beautiful rendition of the theme tune from Cinema Paradiso and the band concluded their set with the Ron Goodwin’s rousing theme to the film 633 Squadron.

The Chamber Orchestra were in good form with Albinoni’s Sinfonia in G and the concert concluded with the First Orchestra and soloist James P (U6) performing the first movement of Lalo’s Cello Concerto.  The conductor of the orchestra, Mr Gunter, said, ‘This performance held the twin joys of a fine young soloist playing with finesse and passion, and an orchestra very much rising to the not inconsiderable demands of a tough score and the challenges of accompanying a peer. All involved should be proud of what they achieved.’

Audio recordings of all the performances can now be found on Soundcloud and video recordings of all the performances can be found on Firefly.
