Triumph for King’s Worcester Swimmers!

Over the past few weeks King’s swimmers have seen great success in the pool at the West Midlands Regionals and at other events.

The West Midlands Regionals are held over two weekends at the end of April and at the start of May, at the 50m swimming pool in the Alan Higgs Centre, Coventry. Only swimmers who achieve qualifying times are eligible to compete in this competition.

King’s swimmers also competed at the British Championships, held in April at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. At this competition there are minimum qualifying times, regardless of the age of the swimmer, where the likes of Adam Peaty, Duncan Scott and James Guy competed.

Upper Sixth student Hannah W competed at the Regionals, where she qualified for several events, winning multiple medals. Hannah also competed at the British Championships, where she competed in two events, and at the ESSA Inter-Divisional Swimming Championships in March 2022, where she was selected to compete for the West Midlands team.

Aled L (Lower Remove) competed in 11 events at the Regionals, making finals for three of the events. He also competed at the Welsh National Championships over the Easter weekend, where he competed in nine events, making the finals in the U14/U15 category. Aled was the top ranked 14-year-old boy in the 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke and the 200m IM.

Harry C (Lower Remove) competed fantastically at the Regionals, winning seven Gold medals and one Bronze medal in the U14 races.

Lower Remove pupil Ben G qualified for 12 events at the Regionals, where he competed in eight of them, making the finals for seven. Ben won Gold in the U15 50m Butterfly, as well as two Bronze medals in the U15 50m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle.

Jess D (Lower Remove) competed at the Regionals, where she qualified for seven events and competed in four of those. Jess made finals for three events in the U14 races, but unfortunately couldn’t compete at the second weekend of competition as she was competing in the National Age Group U17 Water Polo Championships for Cheltenham, where the team won Silver.

Frankie B (Lower Remove) won two Gold medals in U14 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly at the Regionals.

Lower Sixth student Bella B qualified for several events at the Regionals, but did not compete.

Grace R (Lower Remove) made the finals at the Regionals for 50m Breaststroke, where she came fourth, 100m Breaststroke, where she came fourth, and 200m Breaststroke, where she came seventh.

Dylan L made the finals in four events at the Regionals, winning two Gold medals in U13 50m Backstroke and 100m Backstroke, as well as a Silver medal in the 200m Backstroke.

British Summer Championships and Home Nations

All swimmers who wish to be considered for the Summer Nationals enter competitions in a specific qualifying time window from March to May. Their time is logged and ranked and when the window closes, swimmers who qualify in the top 24 of their age group in the country are invited to compete in the prestigious British Championships, held this year in Ponds Forge, Sheffield. Those ranked outside the top 24 are then ranked within their chosen home nation, England, Scotland or Wales. The top 20 of these swimmers are then invited to the Summer Championships in each region.

Frankie B (Lower Remove) has qualified to compete at the British Championships in U15 Butterfly and at the English Nationals in U14 50m Freestyle.

Hannah W (Upper Sixth) has qualified to compete at the U18 British Championships, where she will compete in seven events, which is an exceptional achievement!

Harry C (Lower Remove) has qualified to compete at the U14 British Championships, where he will compete in eight events, which is another unbelievable achievement!

Ben G (Lower Remove) has qualified to compete at the English Nationals in the U15 50m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle.

Three Counties Gala

The Worcestershire team compete against Gloucestershire and Staffordshire in an annual competition, held this year at the GL1 Centre in Gloucester on Sunday 10th July.  Swimmers for the County Team are selected by a panel of three from the short course (25m pool) ranking data provided by the Swim England National Rankings and only times swum within the last 12 months are considered.

Three King’s swimmers have been selected to compete in this: Frankie B, Harry C and Ben G. Congratulations to all on this fantastic achievement!

The British Championships are on the 22nd – 28th July and the English Nationals are on the 5th – 9th August, and both are held at Ponds Forge this year. Congratulations to all those who have qualified to compete at these competitions and we wish you the best of luck!
