West Midlands Swimming Success

Seven swimming teams from King’s Worcester competed at an English Schools’ West Midlands Swimming secondary qualifier at Malvern College.

Twelve schools from Worcestershire and Herefordshire chased a coveted place in the national finals at the London Aquatic Centre this month.

Pre COVID-19, the top 30 schools in each age group qualified for the final, but this year it was extra tough, with only the top 20 qualifying.

In the qualifying round both the junior boys (George P, Ollie I, Harry C, Dylan L and Alex M) and the junior girls (Florence V, Zara A, Daisy F, Heidi M and Phoebe M) all swam strongly to be placed second in both the freestyle and the medley relay.

In the intermediate age group, the girls (Frankie B, Jessica D, Amelia V and Ruby I) and the boys (Harry C, Ben G, Aled L and Henry H) all swam competitive races, finishing first in every race. In the medley relay, the boys ranked twentieth nationally and sneaked through into the national final. This is particularly impressive as all four boys are in the same age category next year.

In the senior age group (FF, L6 and U6) King’s fielded three teams. One boys’ team (Dan D, Leo R-B, Henry H and Sam H) outswam their competitors, gaining first places in both relays; the two girls’ teams (Hannah W, Alex B, Bella B, Izzy T, Betsy R, Felicity Q, Jessica D and Frankie B) were placed in an exciting first and second place. Again, this is particularly impressive as Jessica and Frankie were swimming up an age group to compete for the B team. The A-team girls were placed first in the West Midlands region in both relays and recorded very fast times, ranking them ninth in the country in both relays, which promises extremely well for the National Final in London at the end of this month.

This is our first major competition since COVID-19 hit and training has been very disrupted over this time, so I am especially delighted for the swimmers as they have achieved such great results.

There has been even more success in the Pool recently:

Ben G won Silver in the 50m backstroke in the age 15 and under category at the West Midland Short Course Championships last weekend and Hannah W broke the Senior Ladies’ Worcester County record in the 100m Individual Medley in an amazing time of 1.04.71. Well done to both.
