First XI Hockey begin their ISHC Cup Campaign

The 1st XI Hockey team played their first-round game in the ISHC Cup versus Princethorpe College.

The Independent School Hockey Cup (ISCH) is a fiercely competed knockout tournament that attracts around 100 independent schools from across the country.

The team travelled away to Princethorpe and the girls were keen to put on an impressive performance.

It was a tough battle with two strong sides. King’s enjoyed the majority of the possession in the first half but due to the strong defence of Princethorpe they were unable to score a goal. Going into the second half the girls knew the intensity needed to be stepped up as well as the desire to win the ball; Princethorpe were playing a competitive game so King’s were required to show more physicality.

Early in the second half King’s took the lead 1-0 with a short-corner finished by Becca S (FF). Due to a momentary lack of composure in our defence, Princethorpe converted a short-corner after a quick turnaround in our half. This meant the game was drawn 1-1 and extra time needed to be played.

With 5 minutes to play each way, the girls fought courageously and improved their game, knowing that they were in control of the result as long as they maintained composure and kept the intensity high. With strong defence from both ends of the pitch, no goals were scored in extra time. Charlotte M (U6, Head of School) had an excellent performance and was key to the defensive strength of the team.

Due to it being a draw, shuffles were required to determine the victor of the cup game. With some great movement from our keeper Amy H (L6), this allowed for some excellent saves. Well done to the girls who volunteered to take the shuffles in a highly pressurised situation, where the player goes one-on-one with the keeper. Overall the team won the game 5-4, scoring 4 out of 5 shuffles.

Congratulations to the whole team for their outstanding display of effort in enduring extra time and shuffles. The girls are now very excited to take on their next opponents in the coming round of the ISHC Cup!
