Open Mic Night Hits a High Note
This term’s Open Mic Night proved to be a stunning evening, attracting the largest audience the event has ever seen.
Pupils, families, friends and staff gathered to enjoy a vibrant programme of twenty performances, showcasing the talent of performers from U4 to U6.
The evening opened in dramatic style with an instrumental rendition of the Top Gun theme, setting the tone for a first half packed with variety. Performances ranged from classic rock to contemporary pop, featuring songs by artists including Eric Clapton, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. The first half closed with a rousing performance of Like a Bat Out of Hell, sung with energy by Harry F and supported by a session band assembled on the day.

The second half began with an impressive vocal performance from U6 pupils Toby A and Ellie W, with Toby making great use of a loop pedal and Ellie singing at one of these events for the first time. Ellie has been a regular bass player at Open Mic Nights throughout her time at King’s and also passed her Grade 8 violin earlier in the week.
Alex T launched in Lynyrd Skynyrd’s nine-minute epic Freebird with its long and challenging guitar solo, alongside Will P who added in the drum loops and fills.
For the first time at an Open Mic Night we had a singing drummer; Lower Remove’s Arthur T sang and drummed his way through Green Day’s Basket Case with Conor R on guitar and Mortimer D on bass. This was a debut for Arthur and Conor and we look forward to seeing more from this very promising band.
The evening concluded with an arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s Sir Duke with a horn section comprising of Henry K, Ed S and John E. Lead singer, Sam P, entertained the audience with several songs during the evening, not just with his singing but also his funky dance moves!
With such a wide range of musical styles, instruments and performers, the evening was a true celebration of creativity and confidence. It was an excellent occasion, enjoyed by all who attended.
Weather permitting, next term’s Open Mic Night will take place in the School Gardens on Friday 19 June at 7.00pm.
