King’s Music Scholars Celebrate Prestigious Awards
Two talented King’s Music Scholars have both received significant music awards this year, testament to their exceptional talent and dedication, as well as the ongoing support and teaching they receive from the committed music staff.
John E Appointed as Bass Choral Scholar
Lower Sixth student, John E, has been appointed as a Bass Choral Scholar in the Cathedral Choir. This incredible achievement involves singing alongside the professional adult singers and choristers several times a week, and he has already sung at significant events such as the installation of the new Bishop of Worcester.
Being offered this role whilst being a Sixth Form pupil demonstrates John’s exceptional musical talent; these awards are normally only offered to post A level and university students who live on-site and contribute to the wider life of the Cathedral.
John comments: “I’m thrilled to have been given this amazing opportunity to sing with the cathedral choir as a choral scholar. It will be a brilliant experience for me to develop as a musician. It’ll be fun but also a challenge to learn lots of new music, especially alongside all my busy A levels, but everyone has been so supportive and welcoming.”
Rory W Wins Young Musician Award
Rory W, in Lower Remove, has won the Hereford Police Young Musician Award 2026. This is a competition open to musicians aged 14-22 in Herefordshire and Worcestershire with an impressive winning prize of £1000.
Rory, who was the youngest participant in the final, said, “The competition involved playing up to 15 minutes of music – I played the Beethoven Pathetique Sonata on the piano and Toccata in F by Buxtehude on the organ.”
“I also had to have a short interview where I was asked questions about my plans for the future in music and what I would spend the money on. As the youngest there, I was very nervous! But it was great to hear the other competitors’ pieces as it was interesting to observe their musical expression (e.g phrasing).”
“I was extremely happy to win this prize and it was very helpful to my music career receiving advice from the judges about my future plans in music and also feedback on the pieces I was playing. I will be playing in a concert in Ross-on-Wye for the Hereford Police Choir and I’m very honoured to do so!”
