D&T Students Bring Theory to Life at Mazak

Lower Sixth D&T students recently enjoyed an inspiring visit to the factory at Mazak’s European Headquarters.

Seeing various departments of the company in action is fascinating, but also a super opportunity to bring to life some of the theory our pupils learn about the features of manufacturing methods and systems in large scale production.

D&T trip to Mazak

One of the many rewarding features of A level D&T is the opportunity it brings our students for working closely with a client, with the shared focus of resolving a very real problem that the client is experiencing.

Throughout the design process, our students develop a deep understanding of the problem, and appreciation of the client’s needs as they apply their technical knowledge and prototyping skills to solve it.

Learning how our iterative approach to one-off prototyping relates to designing for quantity production in the commercial world is a popular aspect of our A level theory content.

D&T trip to Mazak

Experiencing some of the features of manufacturing industries on our factory tour is a great way to bring to life some of the concepts we cover in the classroom.  From total quality management, production scheduling and logistics, robotics and materials handling systems to designing for maintenance and the cleaner environment, our students have gained a valuable insight into how their one-off prototyping could be scaled and optimised.

We are grateful to Mazak for their time and support.
