Geography Comes to Life in Somerset

A group of 12 Lower Sixth Geography students enjoyed a highly successful three-day fieldwork visit to Minehead, applying their classroom learning to the diverse coastal landscapes of Somerset.

Staying in Minehead throughout the trip, the students visited Minehead on day one, Porlock on day two and Watchet on day three, exploring both physical and human geography.

They collected a range of primary data to investigate the effectiveness of coastal defences, examine the impact of key coastal processes and explore how each place has been shaped by the people who live, work and visit there. In Watchet, the group gathered additional evidence and observations to support the development of a detailed place case study.

The smaller-than-usual group was engaged, courteous, interested and positive throughout, while also proving excellent company. Alongside enjoying some excellent food and quality beach cricket, the students developed a stronger understanding of coastal and place-based geography and grew in confidence. They can now look forward to a further field trip to Birmingham next term.
