Belinda P Wins Prize in National Latin Competition

Congratulations to Lower Sixth student, Belinda P, who has excelled in a national Latin reading competition.

Belinda had the complex task of learning the pronunciation and scansion of a piece of Virgil’s Aeneid, which she then had to record and submit to show her understanding of the meaning, rhythm and interpretation of the poetry in its original language. As the judges observed, this took ‘considerable practice and attention to detail.’

This is the first time Belinda has entered the competition, and after considering a very strong field the judges have rewarded her with third prize and a book token. This competition is a good example of the sort of super-curricular activities which boost understanding and confidence as well as supporting successful university applications.

Latin is offered at both GCSE and A level at King’s. The study of Classical subjects can lead to a variety of different careers and shows universities and employers that pupils are able to research, collate and analyse materials, and critically evaluate resources in order to formulate arguments.
