Futures Cup leads to England U16 Hockey Selection

At the start of the summer Bryony G (LR) and Amelia T (FF) were selected to participate in England Hockey’s Futures Cup, following multiple tournaments between different Performance Centres from across the Midlands. Before the event, both attended a training day with their team to prepare for the tournament.  Amy H (L6, Br) also represented Wales U18 Celtic Jaguars in the competition.

The Futures Cup took place in the last week of August at Oaklands College, St Alban’s, where Amelia and Bryony played for the Midlands U15 team (Mercia Lynx). Having played the West, the North and Scotland U16s they were placed fourth in the tournament. Amy received a silver medal with Wales for the U17 final, having saved two out of the three shootouts that decided the match.

Amelia T enjoyed the team meetings and video analysis, and learnt not to let adversity bring her down as in all their games they were a couple of goals down at half time. It was a great occasion thanks to the professional environment and Amelia took real pleasure in the opportunity to meet other keen hockey players from across the country.

Following the tournament, Bryony has been invited to join the England U16 programme, where further observation and assessment activities will take place, working toward a place in the final training squad to be announced later in the year. The first training weekend is the 11th & 12th of September at Warwick University. This is an outstanding achievement as Bryony is currently 13 and has three years left at this age group; she was also the youngest girl participating in the Futures Cup.

Bryony said of her experience, “It was an amazing opportunity, playing in front of such a big crowd. The standard was very high but I was pleased with the way I contributed. I was incredibly happy but also surprised to be selected and I look forward to the coming months of further assessments and training.”
