King’s Athletes Excel in Stormy County Championships
King’s athletes delivered a superb set of performances at the Cross Country County Championships at Bromsgrove School, battling through very wet and windy conditions to bring home medals and a host of top finishes.
The Junior Girls set the tone with a thrilling race. Helena C produced a storming run to claim the gold medal in a contest that saw the lead change hands several times. With the field locked together deep into the closing stages, Helena showed great strength and speed over the final 100 metres to drive through for a memorable win. The rest of the team all ran very strongly in a huge field of 103 athletes.
In the Junior Boys’ race, Ben B delivered a brilliant performance, working his way steadily through the pack and only being outkicked in the final stages to take a well-earned silver medal. The team effort was again impressive, highlighted by a top-10 finish from Ed S, who ran a smart second half of the race to pick off numerous competitors.
The Inter Boys contested a high-quality race in which the leading three opened up a clear gap over the rest of the field. Locked together for much of the 5km course, James C stayed in the battle right to the end and was only edged out in the final sprint, finishing an excellent third.
Conditions were at their worst by the time the Senior Girls took to the course, with the ground continuing to deteriorate, but that didn’t stop some strong performances. Ella P ran a sensible, controlled race to finish an impressive fourth, while Catherine H followed up with a solid ninth place.
The Senior Boys were on course at the same time, tackling a tough 6km route in the same testing weather. Ben G fought hard to secure seventh place, with Tobias A close behind in 12th, both showing real grit in difficult conditions.
Athletes finishing in the top five are guaranteed a place at the National Finals, while those placed from sixth to 12th will now await confirmation of selection to represent Hereford & Worcestershire later in the term.
It was another outstanding day for King’s that continues an incredible season for our cross-country runners.
