Triathlon Success at Inter Regional Championships
Congratulations to Thea E and Helena C, who proudly represented the West Midlands at the Inter Regional Championships, the British Triathlon Championships for junior athletes.
Each region selects its leading competitors for the national event, making qualification a significant achievement. After securing their places at a triathlon in June, Thea competed in the 12 and under age group and Helena in the 14 and under category.
An algae outbreak caused by the hot summer meant that the open-water swim was cancelled at the last minute and the competition was changed to a duathlon comprising run, bike and run stages. The change was disappointing for both athletes, whose swimming is a particular strength, while heavy rain made the cycling sections especially demanding.
Despite the difficult conditions, both girls produced excellent performances on against some of the best young athletes in the country. Thea qualified for the B final and finished strongly in 17th place, while Helena reached the A final and secured 12th place overall in her national age-group category.
The results are a fitting reward for the commitment Thea and Helena have shown throughout the year, including training during the summer holidays. Congratulations to them both on representing the West Midlands with such determination; the King’s community is extremely proud of you.
