King’s Debating Team through to the National Finals
The King’s Worcester Debating Team recently competed in the Wales and West of England Regional Finals of the English Speaking Union Debating Competition, which they went on to win.
The debate was held at Hereford Cathedral School and the King’s team went up against five other teams representing schools from Wales and the West of England. This event was especially gratifying for the students as it is the first time in three years that it has been held in person rather than online. The team are now through to the very prestigious National Finals in London on 27th March, the third time a King’s Worcester team has reached the National Finals in the last four years.
The Senior Debating Team consisted of Upper Sixth students Becky Y, Liam R and George C, who all acquitted themselves brilliantly throughout the competition.

The competition involved three separate debates on a wide range of themes, including whether we should we pay reparations to former colonies, whether there should be a 100% inheritance tax and our proposition of the motion that ‘Prison should only be for people who pose an ongoing and serious risk to society’.
In total, six teams competed for the one place available at the National Finals, including RGS Worcester, Sir Thomas Rich’s and Atlantic College. The level of competition was exceptionally high but, after a long and gruelling evening, King’s Worcester proved triumphant.
The team members commented, “It was really exciting to take part in the English Speaking Union Debating Competition. We were particularly interested in the debate on reparations to British colonies, and it was fantastic finally to meet everyone there.”
We wish the team the very best of luck at the National Finals later on this month, when they will be representing King’s against some of the very best student debaters in the country.
