King’s Footballers Progress to County Final
The King’s Worcester First Football Team have continued with their great season by booking a place in the Under 18 County Schools’ Cup Final.
Following on from their Challenge Cup victory over local rivals the Royal Grammar School, the injury-hit First Team squad successfully beat Bromsgrove School’s Firsts two-one in an exciting semi-final.
King’s started off strongly and created a few early chances. In the third minute they capitalised on one of these when King’s Captain George C-F managed to stab home from close range to put King’s one-nil up. Shortly after this goal, Bromsgrove School created their own chance, hitting the King’s post from the edge of the box. However, King’s continued to have the majority of the possession, and made it two-nil in the 29th minute as Donal C chipped the Bromsgrove goalkeeper, following his breakthrough of the Bromsgrove defence on the right hand side. Despite King’s continued possession of the ball, the teams went into the half-time break with the score at two-nil to King’s.
Bromsgrove School started the second half on the front foot, but good defensive work by our defence and goalkeeper meant that the score remained at two-nil. Bromsgrove continued to attack the King’s goal, with the injury-restricted King’s squad starting to tire but working hard nevertheless. Despite this, with 15 minutes to go Bromsgrove pulled a goal back and started to push more players forward. But going down to 10 players in the last few minutes didn’t stop the good work of our defence, who stayed resolute to hold onto for the victory.
Head coach Mr Holliday commented on the win, “ This was once again a great squad effort, with a few players absent through injury and illness, and on the back of the Challenge Cup win, the First Team have confirmed their potential by reaching the Cup Final, capping off a great season “
