King’s ‘Goes All In’ for World Book Day

King’s celebrated World Book Day with a vibrant programme of activities designed to inspire every pupil to discover the joy of reading.

Throughout the day, lessons began with a reading of Lamb to the Slaughter, setting a literary tone that carried across the school. Pupils also took part in a “Short Story in a Day” challenge, creating imaginative pieces during each lesson.

The Long Gallery showcased an impressive display of Book Review Competition entries, while the Library hosted creative “Go All In” activities linked to this year’s World Book Day theme, inspired by the National Year of Reading: “Go all in – if you’re into it, read into it.” Younger pupils were delighted to collect their free WBD mini‑books during morning break, handed out by Fifth Form pupils, sparking plenty of excitement in the playground!

World Book Day

A highlight of the day was the initiative inviting staff to wear or bring an item connected to a book they love. This simple but powerful idea encouraged conversations about favourite stories and demonstrated how books stay with us throughout our lives. From subtle nods to bold costumes, staff embraced the challenge enthusiastically – most memorably Mr Charles, who arrived dressed as none other than Sherlock Holmes.

World Book Day

World Book Day also marked the launch of the “Go All In” Reading Challenge for pupils in the Lower Remove.

The fun-filled day was a wonderful reminder of King’s commitment to nurturing a love of reading for all our pupils.
