King’s Marks First Water Polo Match with Thrilling 12–12 Comeback

King’s celebrated an exciting sporting milestone on 12th January as the school’s first-ever Water Polo team took to the pool for its debut match. The fixture, played at home in the school’s recently refurbished 25m pool, marked the culmination of weeks of dedication and training from the King’s Swimming Academy’s Water Polo programme.

The friendly match against Warwick School provided an invaluable opportunity for the Year 8 boys to put into practice the skills they have been developing during their training sessions. The fixture was also an important part of the team’s preparation ahead of King’s inaugural entry into the English Schools’ Swimming Association’s Water Polo Championships later this year. The team was made up of twelve pupils: Teddy C, Harry C, Thomas E, Jonas H, Bryn L, Sam M, Matthew P, Henry R, Rufus P, Rook T, Henry W, Rory T and Tom C.

The event was organised in partnership with local club Worcester Crocodiles, whose support and guidance were instrumental in making the match possible. Head of Swimming at King’s, Chris Jenkinson, would like to extend sincere thanks to them for their invaluable help and support.

Understandably, nerves were high as the boys experienced competitive match play for the first time, and they soon found themselves trailing 1-6. However, after a few tactical adjustments and a renewed sense of determination, the team showed exceptional teamwork, resilience and perseverance. Their efforts paid off in dramatic fashion as they fought back to secure a thrilling 12–12 draw – a fitting and well-earned result!

The match not only showcased impressive skill and spirit but also highlighted the exciting future of Water Polo at King’s. Further opportunities will be available throughout the remainder of the academic year for pupils who have taken part in the Swimming Academy’s Water Polo sessions, ensuring continued growth and development for this emerging sport within the school.

It was an exhilarating and memorable occasion — the perfect beginning to what promises to be an exciting Water Polo journey for King’s.

Further water polo opportunities will be available throughout the remainder of the academic year for the pupils who have attended the King’s Swimming Academy’s water polo sessions, as the programme continues to go from strength to strength.
