King’s Names Boat in Honour of Former Rowing Coach

King’s has unveiled its newest boat, named in honour of former King’s Boatman and Rowing Coach, the late Bob Hinds (Hon OV).

The boat was revealed in a special ceremony held at the school yesterday. To mark the occasion, Mr Hinds’ family joined staff and students to officially name the boat, before watching pupils from the Upper Remove take it on its first outing along the River Severn.

Mr Hinds worked at the school between 1993-2011, not only in the Boathouse but also with pupils in DT and CCF.

Mr Hinds’ daughter, Melanie Hinds, said: “Robert ‘Bob’ Hinds found utmost joy during his time working at King’s School. Supporting the rowing, CCF and more, we believe the times spent there were some of the best of his working career.”

“He was so proud to contribute to the lives and development of young people and overjoyed to see their progress particularly on the water.”

“To know that the King’s School and its community meant so much to him, and to have the honour of his name on a boat, means a great deal to our family, thank you.”

Jim Chalmers, Head of Rowing, added: “Bob was a great athlete and coach, and a fantastic ambassador for rowing. For him, it was a lifelong passion.”
