King’s Pupils take part in an International Conference.
On Friday 20th January, five of our Lower Sixth students (Lucy W, Riya M, Toby R, Oscar P-B and Robynne A-S) and two Upper Remove pupils (Rowan C and Ollie R) participated in an online international conference entitled GoodCOP23. Our delegation represented Pakistan.
This climate-based conference, involving pupils from four continents, was organised by Engage with China and facilitated by The Grange School in Northwich. The debates were organised in five breakout rooms by topic area. King’s led the discussion of Resolution 5 on the topic of food waste. Topics discussed in the other breakout rooms included carbon mitigation, financing of adaptation, compensation for loss and damage due to climate change, and the phasing out of plastics.
The session opened with a description by participants of the environmental issues facing pupils in their own area, and Riya M explained the impact of flooding in the Worcester area to the other participants.
The conference itself opened with speeches by Dame Caroline Wilson DCMG, the current British Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Peggy Liu, Chairperson of JUCCCE, (Joint US-China Collaboration on Clean Energy), Andrew Bissell, a serial technology entrepreneur, Isabel Hilton, a London-based international journalist and broadcaster, and Worcester MP, Robin Walker.
Oscar P-B described his experience, explaining, “Participating in this event has certainly opened my eyes to other people’s views on the matter. The resolution we were given to present also led to plenty of research in the field, which has in turn made me think differently on how to help with the issue. Overall, the conference has been greatly beneficial for my worldview, whilst also being an extremely enjoyable experience.”
