King’s Row to Success at Shrewsbury Regatta!

On Saturday, May 7th members of the Boat Club travelled to Shrewsbury to race in the Shrewsbury Regatta, held on the River Severn.

It was an exciting day for our Lower Removes (Year 9), being their first experience of side by side racing at a formal regatta. They performed exceptionally well against considerably more experienced crews, finishing the day delighted to have been involved and setting their sights on future events to put their training into action.

Our Year 10 rowers fought well in their quad scull races, with the girls progressing both boats through to set up an exciting all King’s final. It was a close-fought race, only decided by a small margin in the closing stages, in front of a large and vocal crowd. The crew of Tilly B, Ruby I, Daisy P, Emily A and Lucy F crossed the line first to take the medals.

Our Year 10 Boys’ Quad progressed to the final and raced well, but were just beaten to the line. The Fifth Form rowers did a terrific job amongst stiff competition.

The Girls’ Four raced in the women’s category and reached the final, as did Claudia in her WJ16 Single and the Girls’ Quad Scull. They all just missed out on a medal but gained some fantastic race experience in the lead up to the forthcoming National Schools’ Regatta at the end of the month.

Our Senior Boys’ Double Scull suffered from a technical issue in their race, but the Coxed Four faired much better. The four of James L, Tom K-D, Henry H, Bobby R and Shri R made their racing debut and were keen to make an impression. Once they found their rhythm in the final, they demonstrated their skill and crossed the line by a comfortable margin over their opposition.

The rowers take a break from racing this weekend to prepare for the forthcoming Worcester and National Schools’ Regattas.
