King’s Rowers Win Raft of Medals at Shrewsbury
Over sixty King’s rowers competed at Shrewsbury Regatta on the River Severn on Saturday, with many seeing their talent rewarded with podium places.
The event was much anticipated for many Boat Club members; it was the first event, on the water, for our year nine rowers as well as our new sixth form recruits, whilst those with external examinations took the time to revise.
Spectators were entertained by racing throughout the day, with races set off at two minute intervals, providing a great spectacle in the glorious sunshine. King’s rowers excelled on the water with most of our crews winning their early rounds in the knock-out competition.
The excitement grew as many progressed all the way to the finals, setting up all-King’s finals in some events. It was wonderful to see the teamwork and enjoyment among the club, buoyed by the success of our crews.
Our Year 9 girls quad scull of Katie F, Edith D, Chloe H, Ace D and Sophie C sculled superbly well, with great maturity as they beat Grange School, then King’s School Chester followed by Stourport in the final to claim victory in their event.
Not to be outdone, the Year 9 boys quad scull of Jack B, Jack H, Harrison D, George P and Harry C also beat Grange School in their heat, they faced another of our crews in the semifinal and our third entry in the final to win their event, with a great display of disciplined sculling.
It proved to be an incredibly successful day for King’s on the river, with nine medal winning crews taking home 23 medals, and so many progressing to semi-finals and finals.
The King’s rowers take to home waters this Saturday, with over fifty crews racing at Worcester Rowing Club’s annual Spring Regatta.
