King’s Rugby Players Shine in Local Derby Fixtures
Last week, the King’s Worcester rugby teams faced RGS Worcester in an exciting series of local derby matches. Players across all age groups showcased exceptional determination, teamwork, and skill, rising to the occasion despite challenging conditions. While Storm Darragh caused a few games to be postponed, the matches that went ahead delivered a thrilling display of competitive spirit and athleticism.
The action began on Thursday evening with the 2nd XV playing in ‘Mini Modus’ at Worcester Rugby Club. Battling through horrendous weather, both teams fought valiantly in an extremely close game that highlighted the resilience and competitive spirit of King’s rugby.
Visibility was a problem and the wet conditions did not suit the running rugby the team has played so effectively over the course of the season. The boys did extremely well to keep within striking distance despite the conditions, and the result wasn’t a reflection of the quality of the side. The season has built really well, and the team have much to be proud of. Under normal playing conditions, this has been a very strong squad of players, as demonstrated by the results table.
Saturday morning saw the Cinderella Sports Ground come alive with the buzz of anticipation as the U12A, B, and C teams played their matches. The U12A game was particularly thrilling, with end-to-end action keeping supporters on the edge of their seats.
Both teams showcased moments of brilliant skill, but neither managed to pull ahead, resulting in a well-earned draw. The fantastic support from pupils, parents, and families added to the electric atmosphere, creating a memorable experience for all involved.
As the day progressed, competitive fixtures across other age groups brought further excitement. The U15As delivered a remarkable performance in their match on Saturday afternoon. Despite less-than-ideal conditions, the team showed exceptional determination, rallying in the second half to secure a hard-fought draw.
The matches not only underscored the depth of talent within the King’s rugby program but also highlighted the close rivalry and mutual respect shared with RGS Worcester. The outstanding turnout from the school community throughout the week—with parents, family members, and pupils cheering from the sidelines—exemplified the strong spirit and camaraderie that make these derby days so special.
These fixtures were a true testament to the strength and character of King’s rugby, and the players can be immensely proud of their performances in what was an unforgettable week of sport.
