King’s Worcester Storm to Golden Success in County Swimming Gala

King’s Worcester swimmers are celebrating after bringing home a whopping 17 golds in the annual Droitwich and Worcester Secondary Schools Gala, held recently at Perdiswell Leisure Centre.

The King’s team competed against some of the county’s top swimmers from six other schools, Nunnery Wood, Bishop Perowne, Droitwich High, Blessed Edward, Christopher Whitehead and RGS. The gala, with a gruelling 37 races, was split into three age groups: Years 7, Years 8 and 9 and Years 10 and 11. The swimmers were very excited to take part, especially as their second main fixture in the calendar had sadly been cancelled earlier this year.

Facing a few withdrawals due to injury, replacements were found, with special mentions going to King’s Worcester pupils Tom T and Liv K for diving in at the eleventh hour and swimming brilliantly. Also, congratulations go to Catherine H, who not only swam up three year groups to provide a fourth member of the Years 10 and 11 team but also placed a credible second in her Butterfly race and helped her team to first place in the Medley Relay and second in the Freestyle!

The swimming gala ended with the Cannon, where a boy and girl from each age group swim in a very exciting freestyle relay race which is always the highlight of any gala. King’s pupils Mia G, Flo V, Jess D, Isaac P, Dylan L and Harry C thundered to victory, making the whole thing look simply effortless. Having been narrowly in the lead at the halfway stage, the swimmers nervously awaited the results. They were over the moon to learn that King’s Worcester had won the gala by 13 points, securing more silverware for the King’s trophy cabinet!

Well done swimmers; we are very proud of you. You all showed great team spirit and without exception, swam with true grit and determination.
