KSW Students Conquer Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition in the Northern Lake District

Twenty-four Upper Sixth students from KSW have successfully completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Qualifying Expedition in the stunning yet challenging Northern Lake District. The group, consisting of 15 boys and 9 girls, embarked on this demanding adventure from August 17th to 21st, 2024, under the guidance and supervision of KSW staff.

The expedition began with a base camp in Braithwaite, where the students were treated to a hearty breakfast before setting off on their four-day journey. Carrying all their food and equipment, the students were required to hike for over eight hours each day, navigating the rugged terrain from Keswick to Pooley Bridge.

The first day of the expedition on Sunday saw the students enjoying clear skies, which provided breathtaking views of the Lakes from the surrounding hills. Spirits were high as all groups arrived at their campsites on time, excited and energized for the days ahead.

However, the weather took a turn on Day 2, as rain and wind made the trek significantly more challenging. The students faced conditions more reminiscent of autumn than summer, with a particularly wet and windy night testing their resilience. Despite the tough conditions, all groups managed to keep dry and pushed forward.

Day 3 brought a welcome break in the weather, allowing the students to soak in the incredible vistas of the Helvellyn Range and Ullswater. Due to high winds in the forecast for that night, two groups wisely diverted to a safer valley campsite, demonstrating their adaptability and sound decision-making under pressure.

By Day 4, the students were well into the rhythm of the expedition. The final day saw all four teams complete their journey with flying colours, meeting all the conditions required for the Gold DofE Expedition.

This expedition was not just a physical challenge but a testament to the students’ teamwork, resilience, and determination. The KSW staff, who led and supervised the expedition, could not be prouder of the students’ accomplishments.

“Well done to all – a testament to real teamwork and resilience. They were fabulous company, and the staff are really proud of their achievement,”

The students’ completion of this expedition marks a significant milestone in their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award journey, reflecting their dedication and hard work. The experience has undoubtedly provided them with memories and skills that will last a lifetime.
