National Cup Campaigns off to Promising Starts

Our senior sports teams have played in the first round of their respective national cups over the last week, with very promising results.

Hockey

U18 ISHC Round 1 – Redmaids’ School

The U18 squad produced an excellent performance in their opening ISHC fixture against Redmaids’ School, building strongly on the principles and foundations established in their first two matches of the season, which resulted in impressive victories over Solihull and King’s Gloucester.

From the outset, the intensity of play was outstanding. The girls controlled possession for large periods of the game, moving the ball confidently and demonstrating excellent composure under pressure. Their dominance was rewarded in the first half with two well-executed short corner goals, both finished with powerful and clinical strikes to give the team a deserved advantage.

Defensively, the squad remained organised and disciplined throughout. When called upon, our goalkeeper made crucial saves to deny Redmaids on the few opportunities they managed to create and ensuring the team maintained control of the contest.

The second half saw the girls continue to dictate the game, adding two further goals through well-taken finishes that reflected the quality of their attacking play. The combination of controlled possession, relentless work rate and strong finishing made for an impressive display.

The players should be incredibly proud of their performance. This was a mature and accomplished team display that showcased the potential within the squad and highlighted what they are capable of achieving as the season progresses.

Netball

Last week, the 1st team produced a convincing victory over Warwick in the preliminary round of the Sisters n Sport Cup, earning a place in the next round against Oakham.

Despite being a newly formed side, the players quickly adapted to the King’s style, combining effectively to build pressure in defence and develop strong connections both on and off the ball.

The team followed this success with another impressive win against Malvern in the first round of the Independent School National Cup.

Played at a fast pace, King’s demonstrated strong positional awareness to keep the game flowing.

Defensively, the team held ball-side positions, forcing errors and creating a high turnover rate, while maintaining their intensity throughout. Malvern continued to challenge until the final whistle, and we wish them the very best for the county competition.

Football

King’s 1st XI football team progressed through to the second round of the National Boodles ISSFA Cup following an impressive victory over Princethorpe.

The team’s first competitive fixture of the season got off to a good start, creating a number of early chances. The team continued to put the Princethorpe defence under pressure and won a number of corners, which despite creating chances to score they could not convert.

In the 27th minute, King’s took the lead following some great work down the left hand side by Man of the match Angus G, who put in a great cross to Joe F at the back post to score. Princethorpe immediately looked to get back on even terms and were unlucky to have a goal ruled out due to an offside decision. Their bad luck continued when Ethan H made contact with the Princethorpe centre forward in the penalty area, only for no penalty to be awarded. The King’s team went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

The start of the second half saw Princethorpe very much on the front foot and equalised following a good move with the forward scoring past Harry S in the corner of the goal. This equaliser seemed to refocused the King’s team and on the 12th minute of the second half, they regained the lead from a counter attack, seeing Lucas F slide a shot under the body of the Princethorpe goalkeeper.

The last 25 minutes was a very open game, with both teams creating chances, with the King’s midfield of Ryan W, Guy M and Fletcher K very much rolling up their sleeves and working hard to win the ball. This coupled with a very resilient attitude of the whole team saw them through to a victory, winning 2-1 and moving into the second round of the National Cup.
