School Council Ready to Stand Up and Speak Out

On Friday 20th October, our newly relaunched School Council were welcomed by Worcester’s Mayor into the hallowed environment of the Guildhall for a most informative, inspiring, and enjoyable visit.

The School Council is made up of 17 carefully chosen Pupil Representatives from the Lower Fourth (Year 7) to the Upper Sixth (Year 13) and is co-chaired by three Upper Sixth students, Riya M, Max B and Aizah H. It is a project-based group and provides an important avenue for pupil voice at King’s. The project for this academic year is to create and develop an upstander community at King’s and, in the first half term, the School Council has held its first meetings, which culminated in a workshop morning and visit the Worcester’s Guildhall.

At the Guildhall, we were honoured to be joined by Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Louis Stephen, OV, who was a pupil at the School from 1980-1985.He gave us a fabulous tour of the Guildhall, including the Mayor’s Parlour and the old jail cells in the basement, as well as allowing each pupil to hold the Mayor’s ceremonial sword, which was definitely a most enjoyable highlight for everyone!

The School Council then conducted a debate in the Council Chamber itself, debating the motion: This House believes that being an upstander as a teenager is 2023 is too risky. The pupils presented compelling points on both sides of the debate, and then went on to discuss as a group how they could bring their understanding of this topic back into the King’s Community throughout the remainder of this academic year.

With interesting, imaginative, and thought-provoking ideas aplenty, we really look forward to seeing how their work progresses in the coming months, developing a community at King’s who really will stand up and speak out.

More details for colleagues, pupils and parents can be found on the Dashboard Page which will be regularly updated as we move through the year.
