Top Quality Cricket sees Girls’ 1st XI Progress to Quarter Finals of National Cup
King’s School Worcester Girls 1st XI delivered an excellent all-round performance to secure a confident victory over Denstone College and progress to the quarter finals of the National Schools Cup.
Denstone won the toss and chose to bat first, and their strong opening batter began positively, finding the boundary early on. However, King’s opening bowlers responded with discipline and accuracy, keeping the run rate in check with some tight, probing lines.
Captain Tilly C made the crucial breakthrough in the fifth set, removing the first batter to fall. Katie H then struck in the very next over, dismissing the incoming batter and giving King’s the momentum. The Worcester side continued to apply pressure with sharp fielding and intelligent bowling, making it difficult for Denstone to rotate the strike and protect their key batter.
Despite wickets falling at the other end, Denstone’s opener continued to accumulate, playing some well-executed shots to the boundary. However, a moment of brilliance came in the 11th over when Eva T produced a superb direct hit run out, shifting the tide firmly in King’s favour.
Sophie S-G returned to the attack in the 13th set and struck immediately with a key wicket. Katie H then closed the innings in style, taking two wickets in two balls to bowl Denstone out for 70 in just 67 balls — a strong team bowling performance underpinned by sharp fielding and clinical execution.
In reply, King’s got off to a flying start with 13 runs from the opening set. Despite the early loss of captain Tilly C in the second set, and a second wicket falling shortly after (Grace), King’s remained composed. Sophie S-G and Bryony steadied the innings with a valuable partnership. Bryony looked in fine form before falling for a well-made 19, bowled by Denstone’s key bowler.
Phoebe B then joined Sophie at the crease, and together they batted with maturity and confidence, rotating the strike well and capitalising on loose deliveries. Their partnership saw King’s home, finishing on 72 runs from 52 balls to secure a comprehensive win.
King’s demonstrated quality cricket across all departments — with disciplined bowling, dynamic fielding, and intelligent batting. This performance sees them deservedly advance to the quarter finals of The Cricket Paper National Schools Cup, where they will take on Yorkshire Cricket College.
