U12 Hockey Team Crowned Regional Champions
King’s U12 hockey team delivered a thrilling comeback to clinch the title at the Regional Championships last week.
Their inspiring performance saw them grow in confidence with every match, demonstrating skill, resilience, and superb teamwork throughout the day.
From the very first push-back, the girls played with purpose and energy, listening brilliantly to feedback and applying it immediately in their gameplay. Their attacking play was exciting to watch, with several excellent goals scored across the tournament, and their defensive organisation grew stronger with every match.
They started the tournament with comfortable wins against Worksop College and Thomas Telford, and then an unfortunate loss to Repton in the third game in the group, where the girls dominated the game and had multiple chances but an exceptional performance from their goalkeeper denied the girls the victory they deserved.
They didn’t let this affect them, maintaining their confidence in the final three group games, winning all comprehensively. This meant they topped the group with 15 points, scoring 16 goals and conceding just three.
These outstanding results secured the girls a place in the semi-finals, where they continued their determined run with a disciplined 1–0 victory over King’s High Warwick. The winning goal coming from a very well executed short corner routine.
The final against RGS was epic. Despite going 2–0 down, the team showed exceptional character, fighting their way back with some outstanding hockey to level the score at 2–2.
With the match tied, it came down to shuffles – a new experience for many of the girls. After the first three shuffles each, the score remained level, sending the contest into sudden death. Phoebe produced a superb diving save to prevent the RGS player from scoring and then Marnie then stepped up with remarkable composure, slotting home the decisive shuffle to secure the title.
This triumph is a testament to the girls’ teamwork, resilience, and willingness to learn. Their attitude both on and off the pitch was exemplary, and they thoroughly deserved to be crowned U12 Regional Champions.
A huge well done to every player involved – you made the school incredibly proud!
