Victory for Rugby Sevens 1st VII at Annual King’s Tournament

King’s Ruby Sevens 1st VII are celebrating after lifting the Plate at our annual tournament, held once again at Droitwich Rugby Club.

The team performed well in the group stages, but despite not losing a game, a frustrating draw against Sir Thomas Rich meant we came second on points difference setting up a plate semi-final against a strong Magdalen College team.

Two quick fire tries gave Magdalen a 14-point lead. However, the response from King’s was exceptional, and 28 unanswered points later they had a final against Bloxham to look forward to.

It was a great final with two evenly matched teams, and the squad had to dig deep again after conceding early on. Tries from Henry H, Daniel A, Will M and Alex P eventually put us in a strong position that gave the team a deserved victory.

It was the perfect preparation for The National Schools Sevens tournament in London next week, giving the squad the confidence that they will need to compete at that level.

This fantastic win follows a busy Rugby Sevens season for the 1st VII so far.

Reaching the Cup semi-finals at Bristol GS set us up well for our trip to The North of England Sevens. We played some good Sevens to reach the Cup quarter finals where we met Sedbergh who were the eventual winners. A strong performance saw the team push them really hard but those key moments didn’t fall our way.

This was followed by a trip to Hereford CS where we won all five games with a particularly strong performance at the end to see off Warwick school.

Congratulations to the team for a fantastic season so far.
