When in Rome…
As part of our extensive programme of trips and visits during the half-term holiday, on 1st November 31 pupils from the Fifth Form, Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth and five members of staff flew to Rome for a four-day tour masterminded by the Classics Department.
Their accommodation was slap-bang in the centre of the Eternal City, at the Largo di Torre Argentina, which is right next to the archaeological site of Julius Caesar’s assassination.
The group enjoyed a very busy schedule in Rome, which included visits to remarkable and famous historic sites such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the Ara Pacis, and the Circus Maximus, all of which they had studied as part of the GCSE or A-level Classical Civilisation courses.
After the dazzling grandeur of Rome, they also visited the archaeological site of Ostia to see how the average Roman lived their life; they explored ancient bath complexes, blocks of flats, a theatre, and even communal public toilets!
Their evenings together included whistle-stop visits to the Trevi Fountain, the Piazza Navona, the Campo di Fiori and St Peter’s Square, where they appreciated the Vatican by night, followed by much gelati, pizza and souvenir shopping. All in all, the group agreed that while it had been a busy programme, it was certainly very well worth it, with everyone thoroughly enjoying “la dolce vita!”
