Worcester Cathedral Concert Sets the Scene for Holland Tour
A large lunchtime audience in Worcester Cathedral was treated to a rich and varied recital, as musicians gave a pre-tour concert ahead of their trip to Holland over half term.
The concert brought together Choir, Chamber Orchestra and Full Orchestra in a showcase of contrasting styles and periods. Set against the historic backdrop of the Cathedral, the performance opened in especially atmospheric fashion, with the string players performing Elgar’s Elegy in front of King John’s Tomb.
The choir then took centre stage, singing the Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei by different composers, including Karl Jenkins. These were accompanied by a combination of strings, organ and percussion, adding depth and variety to the sound and highlighting the ensemble’s versatility.
In the orchestral section of the programme, the audience heard the well-known slow movement from Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”. The performance concluded on a lighter and more energetic note with La Morisque by Susato, a lively Renaissance dance.
The concert served as a preview of the group’s upcoming tour to Holland, where they will give two concerts in Scheveningen and Amsterdam, as well as take part in a Mass in Haarlem.
