Cathedral Choir Schools Unite for Evensong at Gloucester Cathedral
Each year the Chamber Choirs of King’s Gloucester, King’s Worcester and Hereford Cathedral School meet to form a large and vibrant choir. This year’s annual Three Cathedral Choir Schools Choral Evensong took place in Gloucester Cathedral.
The three schools and cathedrals share a close link through the Three Choirs Festival, the oldest choral festival in the world, which alternates between the three cities.
This year’s event saw the choir directed by Quentin Thomas, the Director of Music at King’s Gloucester, who joined the school at the start of the academic year. He chose a challenging programme of music for the service.
The introit was the arrangement of Steal Away by Tippett, which was beautifully atmospheric in the stunning acoustic of the Cathedral and featured Lower Sixth Music Scholar John E as the bass soloist. The Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis was the great setting by George Dyson in D with its exuberant final Amen. The responses were by Rose and the anthem was the gentle setting of Thou wilt keep him by S.S Wesley.
It was a very special occasion with a large congregation of families, staff and governors. We remain incredibly proud of our musicians, and of their incredible talent, hard work, and pride in representing King’s Worcester.
We thank King’s Gloucester, the Director of Music Mr Thomas, and their Old Vigornian Headmaster, Mr Morton, for their excellent welcome and hospitality.
