Golden Summer for King’s Athletics
Athletics at King’s is certainly enjoying a golden summer, with remarkable victories at the Worcester City U17 and U15 Championships. The outstanding numbers who attended our Pre-Season training was an early sign of the enthusiasm which pupils have for athletics in the School and that commitment has certainly brought its rewards.
The U17 Worcester City Athletics Championships were held at Nunnery Wood Athletics Track on Tuesday 30th April and King’s swept the board as the most successful school by far at the event. On the track, out of the 12 events, King’s athletes won five, with second or third places in six, and we enjoyed even greater success in the 12 field events, with victory in seven and 12 second or third places. Our 27 athletes included a good number from the Fifth Form (Y11) and the Upper Remove (Y10), competing against older pupils from other schools, meaning that the future of athletics at the School is assured. The full results school by school can be seen below:
On The Track
Anna C won the 100m girls’ race, in a time of 14.43s, with Hattie W only half a second behind her in third. Joe D was third in the 100m boys’ event, with Arthur M in sixth and Oscar S in eighth. Lilly W was just pipped to second place in the 200m girls, with Ruby N in fifth, and a time of 25.19s meant that Oli T missed out on victory in the 200m boys’ event by less than two-tenths of a second, with Roman W less than a second behind him in fifth place. Lauren H fought hard to come third in the 300m girls, but Peter J won the 300m boys’ race two seconds ahead of the field with a time of 40.95s.
Finishing in 2m, 34s, Henry G missed out on third place in the 800m boys by just one second, but Lucy T finished 10s ahead of the next runner, winning the 1500m girls’ race in 5m, 25s, with Catherine H in fifth place. There was a double King’s victory at 1500m as, in the boys’ race, Ben G snatched victory by just 1s with his time of 4m, 56s, with Joe T in third and Bruce H in seventh. In the relays, the girls were just beaten into second place with a great time of 58.35 seconds, but the boys went one better, winning their relay in 49.43s, 3.5 seconds ahead of the team in second place.
On The Field
In the girls’ High Jump, Esther G was joint second at a height of 1.35m and Ruby N and Sophie G tied in third with a height of 1.32m; Ethan W and Ollie W-J were sixth and eighth respectively in the boys’ event. Hattie W was fourth in the girls’ long jump, but the boys took first, second and third, with Arthur M achieving 4.55m, Oscar S 5.11m and Joe D winning with 5.14m. Frankie B and Sophie C were second and third in the girls’ Triple Jump, and once again the boys took all three top slots, with Roman W in third with a distance of 11.2m, Peter J just 10cm in front in second and Barnaby R the victor at 11.66m. Eva M won the girls’ Javelin; her winning throw of 25.29m was a magnificent 10m further than that in second place.
For the boys, Ollie W-J threw 28.89m to secure second place, albeit well behind Ollie M’s remarkable 36.74m winning distance. Anna C and Lauren H had the girls’ Discus competition to themselves, with Anna’s throw of 18.76m beating Lauren’s by only 1.31m. The boys also took first and second in their Discus competition, with Olly M throwing 22.73m and Jack F winning with 24.59m. Finally, in the Shot, Freya R won the girls’ competition with 6.20m and Jack F and Ethan W came first and second in the boys’ event, with 12.34m and 11.13m respectively.
The top three athletes in each event have qualified to compete for the Worcester District Schools team at the County Schools Championships on Saturday 8th June, where we wish them every success.
ESAA Track and Field Cup, the U14 and U16 County Championships
On Tuesday 7th May, four teams competed in the ESAA Track and Field Cup, the U14 and U16 County Championships, a competition where individuals earn points for the team through their performances in two events. All the teams scored well, with the Junior Girls, Inter Boys, and Inter Girls all finishing second in the County and the Junior Boys just finishing third by only six points. A special mention must go to Charlotte B, Lucia I, and Amelia M in the Junior Girls’ competition, Sam C in the Junior Boys, Inter Girls Anna C, Daisy F, Lauren H, Sophie P and Flo V, and Inter Boys Ben A, Nathan S, Ollie T, Roman W and Ethan W, who each scored over thirty points, which is a great achievement. We look forward to seeing which teams progressed to the A final or B final in due course.
