The Sixth Form at King’s Worcester is an exciting transition, both for existing pupils as they move on to the next stage of their education, and for new pupils who join from a range of local state and independent schools.
Our Sixth Form pupils benefit from exciting and stimulating academic opportunities designed to best prepare them for the next steps in their education journey. As well as developing independent learning and thinking, pupils enjoy working collaboratively with teachers and fellow pupils. All pupils initially choose four A-level subjects in the Lower Sixth (Year 12) and will continue with either three or four of these to full A-levels in the Upper Sixth (Year 13).
Alongside their academic studies, Sixth Form pupils experience significant additional opportunities, including supportive pastoral care, first-class learning and sporting facilities, access to a well-resourced Careers Department, a Key Skills Enrichment programme, a host of co-curricular and sporting activities, and a range of leadership responsibilities across the school.

Two Very Important Years
Sixth Form education is vital in helping to develop young people who will contribute positively to society by leading fulfilled and unselfish lives. At King’s we offer clear moral values and a sense of purpose, strong academic focus and a stimulating environment, in a culture of encouragement, enjoyment, and celebration. All of this, we believe, builds the confidence pupils need, promoting independence and intellectual enquiry.
The two years in the Sixth Form inevitably pass very quickly, but they make an invaluable impact on pupils’ lives. Our aim is to provide pupils with all the vital knowledge, academic results and life skills that they will need to tackle any challenge they encounter in the future with confidence, and lead a successful, happy life.
Why the Sixth Form at King's Worcester?
Wide Choice of A-Levels Covering a Wide Range of Subjects
In the Sixth Form, pupils can choose to study from over 24 subjects at A-level including subjects not offered at I/GCSE, such as Economics, Business, Computing, PE, and Politics.
Pupils achieve very highly in public examinations. In 2019 over 40% of results were graded at A*-A and close to 70% were graded A*-B. Over 25 pupils achieved three or more A*/A grades. Our pupils in the Sixth Form achieved their highest results to date for the Extended Project Qualification: 63% receiving A* and close to 90% A*/A, out of 24 pupils who took the EPQ.

A Vibrant Sixth Form Centre
Whilst the Library, The Bolland Room, and departmental libraries are the main focus of Sixth Form non-contact time, the Weston Centre is the social hub. A newly-built and beautiful space, it offers space to relax, socialise and make new friends. There is a café downstairs and further comfortable seating in the mezzanine level above. Mr Hand (Head of Sixth Form) has his office there and is available to offer support. We are proud of the beautiful design of the Weston Centre and of the atmosphere that pupils have created. An electronic information board is run by a Sixth Form committee.
Key Skills Enrichment Programme
We benefit from the broad range of expertise in our teaching staff, who provide exceptional opportunities to our Sixth Form pupils. There is a Key Skills Enrichment Programme which covers a variety of areas of life for 16 to 18 year olds, including work experience, journalism, research writing, festival safety, cooking, and more. The programme includes:
- A PSHE element designed specifically for Sixth Formers exploring topics such as mental health and well-being, drugs and alcohol, relationships, and cancer prevention.
- The option to pursue specialist areas such as Politics, Community Service and well-being are examples of the options available, along with the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the Gold Arts Award (GAA).
- The EPQ is a research project, where student plan, research and deliver an independent project. It is worth half of the UCAS points of a full A-level. Most pupils complete a 5000-word dissertation on a subject or hypothesis in which they are interested.
- In GAA, pupils take on challenges in an art form, participate in arts activities, experience arts events, get inspired by artists and share their arts skills with others. They create a portfolio to keep a record of their creative journey. Along the way they are supported by an Arts Award Adviser, acting as assessor, facilitator and mentor. Gold Arts Award is a Level 3 qualification and is recognised on the UCAS tariff, attracting 16 UCAS points (equivalent to a Grade B in an AS examination).
A Unique and Supportive Pastoral Well-being system
As soon as pupils join the Sixth Form they are immediately impressed by the openness and friendly nature of our pupils. The pastoral structure at King’s means that Sixth Formers are members of a House, comprising around 90 pupils. With a Year Group Tutor and House Tutor to oversee their school life and offer academic and pastoral support, pupils benefit from a warm and welcoming community in which to seek support and build relationships. Alongside academic study, pupils are well supported by our Careers Department, with experienced professionals available who guide pupils through the Post 18+ choices, UCAS application processes, Higher Education Information Evenings, Elevate UK, and a comprehensive programme for Oxbridge applicants.
Worcestershire’s Highest Ranked Independent School
The Sunday Times Parent Power Schools Guide 2019 placed King’s an inspiring 124th in the national table, which is an impressive 39 places higher than last year. We were the only school to be named in the top 150 out of 900 independent and state schools and were beaten by just six other schools in the West Midlands top 20.
We are proud of this position and the King’s approach is what has enabled us to secure these rankings. However, our focus stays on individuals and their success stories. The pupils who come to King’s Worcester do outstandingly well academically because they enjoy what is on offer, throw themselves into the opportunities which school life presents, and push themselves to give their best in everything they do. They develop a passion for learning inside and outside of the classroom, a curiosity about the world, and a desire to know more about it.
Importantly, our pupils leave with significantly more than just academic results. At the end of their time here, they will have been instilled with the vital life-skills that make them hard-working, confident, caring, valuable members of society, ready to tackle life’s challenges head on.
