Lower Years Production Takes Audiences on a Magical Quest

The Lower Years production of The Phantom Tollbooth transported audiences to a fantastical world over two spectacular evenings last week.

At the heart of the story was Milo, played with charm and curiosity by Mortimer D, (U4), who led us on a quest through lands of logic, language, and imagination.

Along the way, Milo encountered a host of eccentric and memorable characters – some who aided him in his mission to rescue the Princesses Rhyme and Reason, and others who stood in his way.

The drama department‘s production was a feast for the senses: energetic, vibrant, and visually stunning, with imaginative set design, striking costumes, and seamless technical execution that truly elevated the storytelling.

Behind the scenes, the entire show was run by our dedicated pupil tech crew, who operated with professionalism and precision. From lighting cues to sound effects and scene transitions, they managed a complex and challenging show with remarkable skill and confidence.

Rowan T, (U4), delivered a standout comedic performance as the Humbug, delighting the audience with impeccable timing and flair. Bookending the show with grace and gravitas, Mabel M, (U4), offered a mature and thought-provoking portrayal that left the audience reflecting on the deeper messages of the play.

The response from the audience was overwhelmingly positive, with parents sharing their appreciation:

“We all thoroughly enjoyed it. The young performers were great and all of the stagehands and technicians were brilliant too.”

“Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all the amazing work you and the creative team put into the show. It was brilliant—the kids were all great. You should be so proud of what you’ve all achieved!”

“Thank you so much for the experience—she has learnt a lot, from technical skills to resilience when very tired and made many new friends. Each day this week she’s come home buzzing and has loved being part of the tech crew. I went to last night’s performance and thoroughly enjoyed it—very impressive performances from the young cast and crew.”

The pupils themselves also reflected on the experience with enthusiasm:

“I enjoyed mixing with the Year 7s and making new friends.”“Everyone got a role and something to do… The teachers were great and helpful, I loved my costume.”“I really enjoyed the costumes and using the props, like drinking random stuff!”“I really enjoyed the show, especially watching it come alive over time, with the set, lighting, sound and costume.”
