U16 Girls Badminton Team Represent Worcestershire in Regional Finals

Our U16 girls’ badminton team made history this week by proudly representing Worcestershire County in the National Schools Badminton Championships – an incredible milestone for King’s. They are the first badminton team from our school to reach this stage of the competition, marking a significant achievement.

Before qualifying for the West Midlands Regional round, the team competed in two tough rounds, working very hard against strong opposition from other schools. The squad, consisting of Izzy S (UR), Anne G (UR), Katie C (U4), and Lucy M (U4), faced a challenging format where they had to win the most matches in their division to progress. Each match comprised five games – two singles and three doubles – making for an intense, full day of competition.

The girls gave their all, adapting their strategies to counter their opponents’ strengths. They fought hard in every match against fierce competition from highly experienced players. Ultimately, King Edward VI HS secured first place and will represent the West Midlands in the National Finals.

Although they didn’t advance to the next stage, the team had plenty to celebrate. They finished fourth, missing out on third place by just five points – an incredibly close result. They day saw some incredibly close games, great rallies and memorable winning points.

Special mention goes to Katie who won all her singles games bar just the one against the winner of the division. Both Katie and Lucy played against a higher year group, some of whom were up to three years their senior and nearly twice their height (an advantage in badminton). Despite the challenge, the girls embraced the experience and were grateful for the opportunity to refine their skills and return even stronger next year.

Reflecting on their journey, Izzy and Anne, who joined badminton club a couple of years ago, said: “We’ve all had a passion for badminton from the moment we started playing and we are so happy that badminton has become a part of the KSW Sports Programme. Today was great fun and such an amazing opportunity that we are very grateful to have had, and we are excited to see what else we can achieve in the upcoming years.”

Katie and Lucy, who have been playing since the age of five, were equally delighted to finally compete as part of a school team. Their dedication extends beyond competition, as they continue to contribute to the growth of the King’s badminton club and are very excited about the future of badminton at King’s.

Throughout the U16 girls’ badminton competition, the girls have conducted themselves impeccably, representing our school with great pride and sportsmanship.

Their performances caught the attention of their competitors, earning them praise for their strengths – Katie’s was commended for her impressive court coverage and shot deceptions, Lucy for her powerful clears and clever placements, Izzy for her consistent serving and Anne for her brilliant drop shots.

This experience has been invaluable for the team, and we couldn’t be prouder of their commitment and achievements. Well done, girls!
