King’s Pupils Join Forces for Powerful Performance of The Armed Man
One hundred pupils from King’s Senior School and King’s St Alban’s took to the stage of Worcester Cathedral for a moving performance of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, joining forces with two other local schools to mark the 25th anniversary of this much-loved and poignant work.
Composed as a reflection on the horrors of war and the enduring hope of peace, Jenkins’ large-scale choral masterpiece was brought vividly to life by the combined voices of the pupils and the renowned professional ensemble, The Armonico Consort. The choir was supported by a full professional orchestra, creating a powerful musical experience for the audience of more than 600 people.
King’s pupils sang shoulder to shoulder not only with the consort but also with several members of staff, including Head of Foundation, Mr Charles; Head of Drama, Ms Parry; Director of Music, Mr Taranczuk; Assistant Director of Music, Mr Gunter; and Head of King’s St Alban’s, Mr Hawker.
A special congratulations must also go to the winners from the King’s St Alban’s composition competition, Kasvika, Joshua, Hannah, Thea, Cerys, and Martha, who delivered their prayers and poems with beauty and poise. We were especially thrilled for Poppy, who had the rare and unforgettable honour of hearing her own poem set to music and sung by professional soloists.
Conductor Chris Monks praised King’s pupils for their confident and assured singing, noting the confidence and maturity they brought to such challenging pieces. The performance also marked the fourth partnership between King’s and The Armonico Consort in the past five years, with discussions for the next joint project already underway.
For the pupils involved, the evening was a remarkable opportunity to perform in a professional setting within one of the country’s most inspiring venues. Their talent, commitment, and passion shone throughout, making this a memorable celebration of music, collaboration, and the enduring message of peace at the heart of The Armed Man.
