Cathedral Choir Schools Come Together for Evensong
On Tuesday evening, the Chamber Choirs of the three Cathedral Choir Schools, King’s Worcester, King’s Gloucester and Hereford Cathedral School, came together to put on a spectacular choral performance in Worcester Cathedral.
This wonderful occasion marked an opportunity for the school choirs to create an exciting and full sound that mesmerised the congregation.
Since its inaugural service in 2022, the choirs have performed together in Gloucester and Hereford before returning to Worcester this year for a second time. Many pupils in these choirs are former and current choristers who have been involved in the world-renowned annual Three Choirs Festival.
The service was directed by King’s Worcester’s Director of Music, Simon Taranczuk and the Organist was the Cathedral’s Assistant Director of Music, Nicholas Freestone. The repertoire included Elgar’s dramatic anthem, The Spirit of the Lord.
Simon Taranczuk said, “Conducting a large, combined choir of seventy talented pupils from the three schools is a particular honour and a highlight of the year. In the short rehearsal, we were able to put together a lot of music with a wide range of dynamics and mood. The forte moments were countered with some beautiful soft passages.”
The sound of so many combined voices resonating in the large spaces of Worcester Cathedral was a truly memorable experience for everyone. Many thanks to all those involved in Evensong, and we look forward to next year, when the choirs shall join forces again in Gloucester.
