Exciting Easter Exchange Visits for King’s Linguists

Over the Easter holidays, a number of our pupils ventured overseas on foreign exchange visits, designed to enrich their language studies at King’s.

German Exchange

Written by Alex F (UR)

The German exchange visit was a week full of learning, entertainment and experience. It started with a short flight to Düsseldorf, where we met our exchange partners, followed by a drive to Cologne. There I tried some of Germany’s famous dishes, such as the Currywurst, as well as traditional German food throughout the week.

Immediately after arriving, we were thrown into the thrill of a new place, navigating the language and the many miscommunications, splashing down water parks or simply spending time with our exchange partners across the weekend.

The remainder didn’t go by slowly either; we climbed the dizzying heights of Cologne Cathedral, explored the museums of German sport and chocolate, and found the roots of Haribo’s history in Bonn.

The school was also an eye-opening experience, from a carnival of costumes parading down hallways for leavers’ day, to German presentations of Ronaldo and LeBron James. A combined force of German, French and English exchanges also undertook a chaotic but amusing baking task, with varying degrees of success and lots of carrots!

Overall, the exchange was a highlight of our holiday, our partners were delightful, and my German has progressed significantly because of it. I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking to improve their speaking, explore Germany, meet new people and have a great time.

Spanish Exchange

Pupils studying Spanish travelled to Algeciras to reunite with their Spanish exchange partners as part of the annual home-stay exchange.

Despite a weather-related diversion to Málaga, the group quickly settled into an exciting itinerary. Highlights included a full day at a Spanish school, and excursions to Cádiz, the ancient Roman site of Baelo Claudia, Tarifa, and a day exploring Gibraltar.

The visit followed an earlier stay in Worcester by the 15 Spanish pupils and their teachers. Over the course of the week, the visiting pupils experienced a rich cultural programme, including trips to Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford, and the Morgan Motor Company. They also spent a day at King’s, immersing themselves in British school life, and took a guided walking tour of Worcester.

Exchange visits offer unparalleled opportunities for full cultural and linguistic immersion. By living with host families, students gain first hand insight into everyday life in another country, while improving their language skills through real-life communication.

This year’s trip was a resounding success, fostering not only language development but also broadening our pupils’ cultural horizons.
