Gold DofE Training camp at The Old Chapel

Over half term twenty-two Lower Sixth students, supported by six staff, successfully completed an intensive three-day training camp based at the Old Chapel. Groups were put through their paces during a series of practical workshops which were designed to prepare them for the increased challenges they face on their Gold Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

They developed their mountain and teamwork skills through a programme of activities which included a night navigation exercise, practical first aid, a simulated casualty incident on the hills and workshops on campcraft and expedition food. A full day’s mountain walk gave a good physical challenge and an opportunity for the groups to practice map skills by successfully navigating their way around the summits of the Brecon Beacons in challenging weather. This included the summit of Pen Y Fan which is the highest peak in South Wales at 886m. The students are now looking forward to their next venture which will be the practice expedition in Snowdonia in the Easter holidays.
