King’s 1st XI Hockey Team Make History

Our 1st XI Hockey Team have made history this week by becoming the first King’s team to reach Final’s Day in the Independent School Hockey Cup, following a hard-fought victory in the quarter-finals game.

Match Report from Captain Lucy W

On Friday, after much apprehension, as we waited for our opposition to be revealed, the King’s 1st XI Hockey Team headed north to Nottingham to play in the quarter-final of the Independent School Hockey Cup.

The team faced Trent College, who were a strong team, with several skilful players. An intense warmup, preparation and lots of team motivation meant the King’s girls made a strong start during the first half.

Trent were a strong side, but possession remained balanced, and King’s had some threatening spells with the ball. Our defensive corners were successful, keeping the girls in the game despite some strong attempts by Trent.

Several fantastic saves from Upper Sixth Keeper Amelia T were crucial for building momentum and resisting the pressure and noise from a packed Trent sidelined.

The second half was equally as competitive. The intensity was consistent, and the girls worked hard, especially against a fast offensive counterattack. With just 3 minutes remaining of the game, a successful short corner attack put King’s 1-0 ahead. Ruby C’s finish and injection was coordinated and composed. A truly superb reward for 60 minutes of gruelling hockey.

The girls continued to defend a final short corner and several desperate attempts from the Trent attack. The final timer sounded, indicating a convincing and well-deserved victory.

Kings look forward to finals day on Tuesday, 6th February, a groundbreaking and well-deserved achievement. A King’s appearance on Tuesday marks the first in King’s hockey history of a team reaching Finals Day.

It’s been an incredible season of hard work and progress; our appearance at Finals days is a testament to the strength of this side. Hopefully, much more success to come!”
