King’s Netballers Inspired by Severn Stars Player Phumza Maweni

On Friday 9th March we were privileged to welcome Severn Stars player Phumza Maweni who gave a talk and conducted a training session. Born and raised within a poor community in South Africa, her passion for netball began when she was only a twelve year old girl. She explained how she taught herself how to play with a homemade ball and limited kit. She received little support from her family who did not see sport as part of their culture. Despite these barriers her passion resulted in her being selected for her national team and playing in the 2015 World Cup. She was then selected to play as defence for Severn Stars. Due to her being a defender, the training session focused on the defensive drills which are key to dominant defence. The players are now more aware that it is important to keep moving and be explosive with every movement made. These skills should serve the squad well in match play, and the story of Phumza’s love for the game was inspirational.
