Pupils Debate Real-World Issues at Model United Nations Conference
At King’s, we continue to enrich our Senior Students’ studies and broaden their knowledge of global issues by regularly participating in the internationally-recognised Model United Nations (MUN) debate programme.
Five King’s pupils have once again proven themselves as future leaders at the latest MUN Conference, held at Malvern College last weekend.
Sophie R (L6), Charlie H (UR), Holly R (L6), Anne G (UR), Ollie H (L6), spent the day debating against pupils from Worcester Sixth Form College, RGS Worcester, Nunnery Wood and Malvern College.
The pupils discussed issues within their allocated committees, seeking to find mediated solutions to global issues through negotiation and persuasion.
The committees and issues were the following:
DISEC – Arms supplied in the Russia – Ukraine conflict
UNEC – Address fossil fuel dependency in underdeveloped economies and promote sustainable alternatives
UNSC – Solutions for the Sudan crisis, focusing on cease-fire, humanitarian aid and regional stability
UNHRC – Restrictions on freedom of expression by governments and explore measures to protect fundamental rights
ECOSOC – International regulations for cryptocurrencies to ensure financial stability and prevent misuse
Congratulations to all five students for presenting well-researched, intelligent and respectful arguments, with particular recognition going to two of our students who received awards; Sophie R who received an Honourable Mention in her Committee, and Charlie H was named Best Delegate in his Committee.
Model United Nations fosters skills in research, public speaking, debating, writing, critical thinking, teamwork and leadership, helping students to learn more about the principles of the UN and how it functions.
