Supporting Malvern St James Families

We are sorry to hear the news regarding Malvern St James School and recognise how difficult and unsettling this will be for its community.

The King’s Worcester Foundation wishes to offer a supportive and practical conversation to MSJ families who may be considering their next steps for September. Where appropriate, we would be happy to discuss potential places across our schools and to answer any questions.

Second Senior Show Sells Out

On February 7th and 8th, Witches Can’t Be Burned, the second Senior Production of the year, was performed in the Wightman Studio to sold-out audiences.

Silva Semerciyan’s thought-provoking piece was brought to life through the hard work and exceptional performances of the 25-strong cast and crew, transporting audiences to 17th-Century Salem and back to the halls of St Paul’s School.

Pupils from our five eldest year groups portrayed the St Paul’s drama students, who begin to question the gender politics in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible as they rehearse the play.

Encouraged by star student Anuka, played by Bella C (FF), the students agree to re-interpret Miller’s script, resulting in passionate clashes both on and off the stage. The piece was selected by the pupils themselves and rehearsed for over four months. The script tackled both humorous and difficult content at the same time, and the pupils handled this balance perfectly through their on-stage professionalism.

Bella expressed her enjoyment of being a part of the production, saying, “I really enjoyed being a part of Witches Can’t Be Burned! The whole cast came together as a team to create a wonderful show, and taking on the lead role helped to grow my confidence. I had a lot of fun and am so happy with how the performances turned out.”

For a handful of the cast, this was their first show at King’s. For Max B in the Upper Sixth (Y13), it was his final show, after involving himself in every production he could since the Lower Fourth (Y7).

He said, “Performing in Witches Can’t Be Burned was genuinely one of my best experiences at King’s. The entire cast put so much effort into showing their characters and making a good piece of theatre, and the actual performance ended up being incredible: I couldn’t have asked for a better final show at King’s!”

Regardless of age or experience, the entire cast and crew supported one another throughout the process, and their dedication, enthusiasm, and exceptional skill shone through onstage.

For two nights, the talents of the brilliant cast and wonderful pupil Tech Crew left audiences both audibly laughing and questioning their prior perceptions, a testament to the commitment and theatrical ability of the students.

Miss Mitchell (Director) had high praises for the cast, stating, “It was an absolute privilege to work with such a talented cast and crew, and I am so proud of the exceptional show they created.”

Huge congratulations go to all those involved for two outstanding performances.
