U16 Girls Victorious in Badminton County Finals Competition
Our U16 girls’ badminton team emerged victorious in the Worcestershire National Schools Badminton Competition held at Bromsgrove School on 28th January.
Our first ever girls squad consisted of URs Izzy S and Anne G, and U4s Katie C and Lucy M. Prior to this competition, these keen badminton players had exceeded their own expectations by winning all their matches against other schools in our section of Worcestershire to qualify for the County finals.
Not only had this win bolstered their self-confidence as a team, but it had also helped encourage them to keep practising their skills. .
The four girls gave their all in the games, playing cleverly and collaboratively against some tough oppositions. Despite not having practised together in a while, they figured out their game plan together and adjusted to use each other’s strengths to their advantage.
We saw some powerful smashes from Katie, consistent serving from Izzy, clever placement from Lucy and some incredible drop shots from Anne.
The matches were so close that the decisive moment came down to the last few points – we won an equal number of games as the second place’s team. Although they won in points, our win against them meant we took the county title.
These nail-biting finishes made it such an exciting experience for the girls, for some of whom it was their very first time representing our School in a sports fixture. Special mentions should go to both Katie and Lucy, who were unfazed by playing up against people three years their senior. They kept their cool and played with confidence, flair and determination throughout.
The four girls have all worked so hard to get to this point, and aside from their successes they have all enjoyed playing this fast and fun game together. Being our first ever team to have got this far, we’re all very proud of their achievement!
Winning the county title means that the girls will be representing the Worcestershire County in the Regional competition in March and we wish them all the best of luck.
