Under 12 Rugby Players Showcase Exceptional Talent
This week has seen great success for the King’s Under 12s rugby players.
Last Friday, our U12 boys made their school debut in Sevens. The KES Birmingham tournament is a well attended fixture, with 20 teams from well across the region competing on what was a beautiful afternoon.
Making the transition from 12-a-side to 7-a-side isn’t as straight forward as players initially imagine, with a need to move the ball wide important to then create gaps in defences. The team responded brilliantly to coaching advice and played attractive rugby winning the group with victories against KES Aston, De Ferrers and Solihull.
Later in the afternoon, all the teams who finished first in their respective groups played each other; an excellent chance to play again high-quality opposition. Local rivals RGS Worcester were first up, and despite our team having the greater number of try line opportunities, the score finished 5-5. Warwick were next, who are always tough competitors. King’s were superb in tightening up in defence and make the most of overlaps, coming away with a thrilling 15-0 victory. Bromsgrove took their chances very well against us leading to our only defeat of the days, before we finished on another high, defeating hosts Kes Birmingham 10-5.
To finish second in a tournament of such high quality bodes extremely well for the boys who represented the school on this afternoon but all the wider cohort who have been so instrumental at training in recent weeks. We are excited for two further tournaments were both A and B squads will get a chance to shine.
Elsewhere, the U12 Worcester team won the Exeter Chiefs Defender Cup. This team consists of players from across Worcester, with the majority being current King’s pupils.
This fantastic achievement means the team will get to play in a tournament at Twickenham at the Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final.
